What is Fight Ready Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a Martial Art and combat sport that focuses on Grappling and especially “Ground Fighting.” It is a derivative of early 20th century Kodokan Judo, which was developed in Japan. Like Judo, it promotes the principle that the smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and proper technique; applying submissions via joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat them. BJJ can provide training for self-defense, sport grappling tournaments (Gi and no-Gi) and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) competition.  It is becoming a more popular method among students looking to improve physical fitness, core strength, stability and flexibility.

After its conception in Japan, Jiu Jitsu was developed in Brazil and gained popularity for its strategic, effective techniques designed to take advantage of an adversary’s limbs as a counter measure for attack, as well as a very effective discipline used to restrain or subdue possible attackers.

At the Fight Ready Fitness Center, we employ traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques and belt systems under the banner of Relson Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Heath Wigginton.

BJJ classes are incredibly beneficial for students of all ages and skill levels. With our traditional belt ranking system and thorough instruction geared toward mastery of the various submissions and technical aspects of BJJ, students graduate to the next belt based on demonstration of submissions and techniques associated with each belt class. Class attendance is also factored into belt promotion.

BJJ is a fun, safe way to learn a highly effective self-defense method, while improving cardiovascular conditioning, functional strength, flexibility and overall fitness.

We are very proud of our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program due to our authenticity and world-class instruction. Our instructors are dedicated to teaching their students the true art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, demonstrated by our success as a team in local, regional, national and international events. Whether you are looking to get in better shape, have aspirations to compete, improve self confidence and self defense tools, or just want to learn one of the most effective and respected combat sports ever developed, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is for you!

What should I expect from a Fight Ready Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class?

Fight Ready’s philosophy is to provide a systematic approach to training as outlined below:Cardiovascular

  • Cardiovascular conditioning: You can’t properly execute a technique if you are physically fatigued. Classes will allow individuals to increase their physical stamina.
  • Drilling the basics: New technique is not beneficial in increasing the level of an individual’s ability unless basic techniques have been mastered. Basic technique is crucial for a strong foundation in BJJ. More advanced techniques are an extension of the basics and cannot be implemented correctly and efficiently without a strong development of basic technique. Classes will provide the members adequate time to develop critical skills.
  • Introduction of new material: There are thousands of BJJ techniques available. A variety of techniques will be offered to members, determined by an individual’s level. Individuals can determine which moves work best in their personal game, dependent on personal attributes such as size, speed, and flexibility.
  • Free training: Free training (or rolling) is the students chance to fuse cardiovascular conditioning, refinement of the basics, and knowledge of new material. We recommend all students spend 1.5-2 hours a week of free training (3 or 4 times a week for at least 30 minutes).
Classes are an hour and a half in length.

What do I wear to a Fight Ready Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class?
