What is Fight Ready Grappling?

Grappling is a combination of positions and submissions derived from the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and takedown techniques from Wrestling and Judo. Also known as “submission wrestling,” or “No Gi Jiu Jitsu,” Grappling has gained popularity in recent years due to its relevance as an effective training methodology in mixed martial arts (MMA).

The benefits of grappling are extensive. In addition to its proven effectiveness in MMA and situational combat, grappling is a great way to improve functional strength, flexibility, cardiovascular conditioning, body composition and core strength. Grappling is perhaps the best way to get in great shape while staying off your feet!

Fight Ready Grappling is taught by Relson Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Heath Wigginton. Our program accommodates men and women of all ages and skill levels. Within the past several years, submission grappling has been adopted by USA Wrestling and will eventually become an Olympic sport.  Although Grappling is a very controlling and effective way to disarm and defeat an opponent, it is one of the safest combative sports with regard to training and competition. Fight Ready students range from age four on up to 74!

What is a typical Fight Ready Grappling class like?

Grappling classes typically involve:

  • Functional movement prep, which is a “warm up” consisting of fundamental drilling.
  • Technical instruction of the day, which is generally a combination of positions and/or submissions. Students will “drill,” or practice the techniques with a partner.
  • Students will then have an opportunity to test their skills against other students in class in a controlled “roll.” Although Grappling is highly safe, our instructors police the training between students to ensure respect and care is taken to ensure a positive experience.
  • A typical class will feature beginners and elite level grapplers. All students are encouraged to “roll” together to provide diversity in training which enhances improvement. Despite popular belief, it is safer for beginners to train with advanced level grapplers due to the control and caution they use in training.

What do I wear to Fight Ready Grappling class?
